William Hunter House

10 East Taylor Street, Savannah, GA 31401

A home of rare pedigree, this impressive four-level private mansion enjoys a prized address, grandly-scaled spaces, refined finishes, and beautiful views over Monterey Square

Sited in one of the most desirable neighborhoods of Savannah’s Historic Landmark District, on famed Monterey Square, the William Hunter House is a charming private mansion dating to 1872. One of the grandest residences in the area, it is an estate of rare provenance and historical interest.

the history   The mansion was first renovated by Jim Williams, a local antiques

dealer who was also featured as a central character in the famous non-fiction novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Williams transformed the structure into several apartments, but the house was then purchased by the Sprague family and restored to its single-family configuration. This second restoration project, carried out by J. T. Turner Construction, was awarded numerous honors for historic preservation, including the statewide Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual award. The current owner is Robert Duffy, co-founder and president of the Marc Jacobs international fashion empire, who has lovingly maintained this elegant southern gem while using it as a venue for lavish entertaining.

the residence   Encompassing four levels of refined interiors and a total of approximately 8,513 square feet, the home is graced with beautiful historic details throughout. Among the myriad appointments are eight fireplaces, a generously-sized chef’s kitchen, a full personal gymnasium, and a roomy two-car garage. Outside, the heated lap pool is a fitness enthusiast’s delight. Oversized side porches provide some of the prettiest views of the square and the Pulaski monument.

the location   A wonderland of architecture, history, and culture, Savannah is the jewel of the American South. The city’s downtown area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the entire country, and its distinctive style and renowned hospitality attracts visitors from all over the world. Savannah is also host to a burgeoning performing arts scene, including a major dance theater, numerous local classical and jazz music associations, and several dramatic theater troupes. A total of 22 public squares offer a range of attractions, from impressive monuments and fountains to quiet community playgrounds.
